Koeppen's Scheme of Climatic Classification

  • Wladimir Koeppen provided his scheme of classification in 1900 which was modified later multiple times.
BASIS OF CLASSIFICATION
  • He used french plant physiologist Candolle classification of major global vegetation types to classify major climatic types as he believed vegetation is holistic expression of climate of a place
  • Koppen used annual temperature and precipitation data and seasonal variations to delineate different climatic zones.
  • He used alphabets as symbols of these climates.Capital letters for major types and small letter for subtypes of climate.

Vegetation zones by Candolle
Major climate types(symbols)
Temperature and precipitation criteria
Megatherms
Tropical,A
Average temperature of all months is greater than 18 °C
Xerophytes
Dry,B
Evaporation exceeds precipitation
Mesotherms
Warm Temperates,C
Temperature of coldest month less than 18 °C but greater than -3;Temperature of warmest month greater  than 10 °C
Microtherms
Humid cold,D
Temperature of coldest month below -3 °C but warmest month above 10
Hekistotherms
polar,E
Temperature of warmest month less than 10 °C
  • He further classified these major climatic zones into subtypes primarily based on precipitation pattern and has used small case letter for this second level of classification.

f
Precipitation throughout the year
m
Monsoon climate i.e short dry season
s
Summer dry
w
Winter dry

  • On the basis of these, he categorised these 5 major types into further 11 subtypes.

SOME CLIMATE TYPES
  1. Western european type (Cf)
  2. China Type(Cw)
  3. Mediterranean type(Cs)

EVALUATION
Merits
  1. Relation between vegetation types and climate
  2. Descriptive,generalized and simple.
Demrits
  1. Overemphasis on average temperature and precipitation and neglecting other whether elements like no of rainy days, temperature extremes, wind, etc
  2. No importance to air mass influence.
  3. Lots of symbols makes it difficult to memorize.

DAVIES,PENCK & KING

Geographical Cycle of Davies William Morris Davies was an american geographer who gave first general theory on landform development.. Davis' most influential scientific contribution was the "geographical cycle",  which he defined in an article,’ The Rivers and Valleys of Pennsylvania ,’ published at the end of 19th century. According to him, uplifted landmass undergoes sequential development or erosion till base level in various stages. This sequential development referred as cycle of erosion. FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES 1.Cyclic nature of landform evolution. 2 Uniformitarianism:The same physical processes and laws that operate today, operated throughout geologic time, although not necessarily always with the same intensity as now BASIC POSTULATES Upliftment takes place on featureless plain which he modified 10 yrs later to accept it can occur from geosyncline. Upliftment on geological timescale is sudden. In later works, he accepted it to be episodic. ...

Rene Descartes: A Critique

Introduction René Descartes (1596-1650) was a French philosopher, mathematician, and scientist who is considered one of the founders of modern Western philosophy. He is known for his contributions to analytic geometry, his development of the scientific method, and his famous philosophical statement "Cogito, ergo sum" ("I think, therefore I am"). Descartes is also known for his works on metaphysics, epistemology, and the philosophy of mind. Descartes' ideas had a significant impact on the development of Western philosophy and science. His emphasis on reason and mathematical reasoning as a tool for discovering truth has been influential in the development of the scientific method. Additionally, his ideas on the separation of mind and body and the nature of reality have continued to be influential in modern philosophy. Descartes' works include "Meditations on First Philosophy," "Discourse on the Method," and "Principles of P...

Unveiling the Hidden Wisdom: A Comprehensive Exploration of Kabbalah

Kabbalah, meaning "wisdom" or "secret," is a mystical tradition within Judaism that explores the deeper, hidden dimensions of God and the universe. It's not a separate religion but rather an esoteric body of knowledge and practices that complements and enriches traditional Jewish scripture and law.  Kabbalah delves into the nature of divinity, the creation of the cosmos, the structure of reality, and the human soul's connection to the divine.  It uses symbolic language, intricate diagrams, and meditative techniques to unlock the secrets of existence and achieve spiritual enlightenment. The Origins and Evolution of Kabbalah: From Ancient Roots to Modern Interpretations The roots of Kabbalah can be traced back to ancient Jewish mysticism, including early interpretations of the Torah and prophetic visions.  However, it was during the 12th and 13th centuries in Southern France and Spain that Kabbalah truly blossomed into a distinct and influential mystical sys...
