Sea Floor Spreading

Q.Write short note on seafloor spreading theory (08/20)

Concept of seafloor spreading was given by Harry Hess in his work titled ‘Essays in Geo-poetry’ published in 1960s.
He connected his findings related to mid-atlantic ridge(using sonar technology) and convectional current theory to arrive at his theory of seafloor spreading which talks about horizontal movement of ocean floor.

CONVEYOR BELT MECHANISM
Rising limb of conventional current lies below the continental ridges. This rising plumes spreads below the ridge providing tensional stress and a driving force for the parallel movement of ocean floor away from the ridge. Some of these rising magma comes out of the ridge and spreads itself on the both side of ridge. This results in creation of fresh layer of ocean floor. Thus, ocean floor is being created at the oceanic ridge such that the younger layer lies near ridge and older away from it.Thus, oceanic basin was estimated to be not older than 200 millions years.
At the same time, oceanic basins are destroying itself near subduction zone where the subducted part of oceanic floor are being melted and turning into magma, Thus, seafloor spreading forms a part of a conveyor belt system containing ridges, ocean floor, subduction zone while the conventional system of magma playing the role of the engine powering whole movement.
VINE-MATTHEWS-MORLEY HYPOTHESIS
These scholars connected seafloor spreading with existence of symmetric pattern of geomagnetic reversal in ocean crust. This was later proved and formed the basis of plate tectonics theory.

DAVIES,PENCK & KING

Geographical Cycle of Davies William Morris Davies was an american geographer who gave first general theory on landform development.. Davis' most influential scientific contribution was the "geographical cycle",  which he defined in an article,’ The Rivers and Valleys of Pennsylvania ,’ published at the end of 19th century. According to him, uplifted landmass undergoes sequential development or erosion till base level in various stages. This sequential development referred as cycle of erosion. FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES 1.Cyclic nature of landform evolution. 2 Uniformitarianism:The same physical processes and laws that operate today, operated throughout geologic time, although not necessarily always with the same intensity as now BASIC POSTULATES Upliftment takes place on featureless plain which he modified 10 yrs later to accept it can occur from geosyncline. Upliftment on geological timescale is sudden. In later works, he accepted it to be episodic. ...

Rene Descartes: A Critique

Introduction René Descartes (1596-1650) was a French philosopher, mathematician, and scientist who is considered one of the founders of modern Western philosophy. He is known for his contributions to analytic geometry, his development of the scientific method, and his famous philosophical statement "Cogito, ergo sum" ("I think, therefore I am"). Descartes is also known for his works on metaphysics, epistemology, and the philosophy of mind. Descartes' ideas had a significant impact on the development of Western philosophy and science. His emphasis on reason and mathematical reasoning as a tool for discovering truth has been influential in the development of the scientific method. Additionally, his ideas on the separation of mind and body and the nature of reality have continued to be influential in modern philosophy. Descartes' works include "Meditations on First Philosophy," "Discourse on the Method," and "Principles of P...

Unveiling the Hidden Wisdom: A Comprehensive Exploration of Kabbalah

Kabbalah, meaning "wisdom" or "secret," is a mystical tradition within Judaism that explores the deeper, hidden dimensions of God and the universe. It's not a separate religion but rather an esoteric body of knowledge and practices that complements and enriches traditional Jewish scripture and law.  Kabbalah delves into the nature of divinity, the creation of the cosmos, the structure of reality, and the human soul's connection to the divine.  It uses symbolic language, intricate diagrams, and meditative techniques to unlock the secrets of existence and achieve spiritual enlightenment. The Origins and Evolution of Kabbalah: From Ancient Roots to Modern Interpretations The roots of Kabbalah can be traced back to ancient Jewish mysticism, including early interpretations of the Torah and prophetic visions.  However, it was during the 12th and 13th centuries in Southern France and Spain that Kabbalah truly blossomed into a distinct and influential mystical sys...
